The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity), Sahara deck – Abuja city centre has donated some birthing kits to the Internally Displaced Persons camp located at Durumi, Garki, Abuja.
The visit which was led by Mr. Victor Ofili (Capoon Sahara Deck), was in commemoration of the World Refugee Day that is marked every 20th June of every year.
Ofili recalled that his group had promised to intervene on the medical lapses they noticed when they visited earlier in March.
According to him, “we are here to fulfill the promise we made to donate basic birthing kits and other medical supplies which the management of the IDP mentioned that they lack when we first visited in March this year to celebrate the international women’s day with you people”.
“Today, everything on the list the women leader gave to us is what we came with”. Ofili said.
Reacting to the donation by the Seadogs, Liyatu Ajuba, the women leader who also doubles as the midwife in the camp expressed her appreciation to their guests amidst tears while recounting how she had managed to birth babies in the camp without basic birthing kits such as hand gloves.
“I have had to deliver babies here with just nylon, without basic birthing materials, thereby endangering myself and the babies in the process”.
“We are grateful to the Seadogs for fulfilling their promise to provide all that we mentioned to them that we needed when they first visited. Thank you for providing all”. She said.
Receiving the medical supplies on behalf of the camp, the coordinator of the camp, Idris Halilu thanked Seadogs for their thoughtfulness in responding to their needs.
Halilu in his statement regretted that the government agencies responsible for the welfare of the residents in the IDP camp have been insensitive to their needs.
“Our clinic here is ill equipped, if a pregnant woman goes into labour we don’t have the capacity to manage her. This supplies by Seadogs will go a long way in boasting our confidence that somehow, we are remembered. I urge other people to emulate these kind gestures”. He concluded.
The Medical Mate of Sahara Deck, Wisdom Ekanem, pointed out that the birthing kits will cater for 50 deliveries and other supplies include – face masks, hand sanitizers and latex gloves.
Others include adult and pediatrics anti-malarials, deworming drugs and antibiotics.
