The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an investigation into the alleged misconduct of some officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Seme border. This decision comes after Moyo Okediji, a professor of African art from the University of Texas, Austin, shared his experience on Facebook. Okediji claimed that he was extorted and robbed of over $500 by NIS personnel when he entered Nigeria through Ghana.
According to Okediji, the NIS officials stopped him for a search and demanded $40 as a bribe for traveling with an expired Nigerian passport. The minister has taken this allegation seriously and has initiated an investigation into the matter.
The probe aims to uncover the truth surrounding the incident and ensure that such misconduct is not tolerated within the ranks of the NIS. The minister has expressed his commitment to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the Nigerian immigration service.
The outcome of the investigation will determine the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against the officials involved. This move demonstrates the government’s dedication to tackling corruption and ensuring the accountability of public officials.
