The Anioma Unity Football Tournament kicked off on Monday, December 16, 2024, with a thrilling opening match between Ika South and Oshimili North. Hosted by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko at the Austin JJ Okocha Stadium, Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South, the tournament aims to foster unity and spotlight football talent in Delta North.
Substitute Destiny Isioma proved to be the hero for Ika South, delivering two stunning goals to secure a 2-1 victory in a match filled with drama and skill. The first half saw both teams locked in a tactical battle, ending in a goalless stalemate. However, the second half came alive with Isioma’s electrifying performance.
Fifteen minutes after his introduction, Isioma broke the deadlock, racing past defenders and slotting home a composed finish. Oshimili North responded quickly, equalizing through Solomon Onate, who capitalized on a handling error by Ika South goalkeeper Ayodele Oluwasegun, known as “Yaro.” Despite the setback, Isioma’s persistence paid off in the 75th minute when he powered in the winning goal, sending Ika South into the next round.
Speaking after the match, Mr. Collins Okonkwo, Senior Special Assistant to Senator Nwoko on Youth Matters, described the game as “thrilling and enthralling,” praising the players’ performance. He emphasized the tournament’s goal of discovering and nurturing talent, providing a platform for young players to achieve national and international recognition.
Okonkwo also lauded Senator Nwoko for his unwavering support, which has been pivotal to the tournament’s success. He highlighted the presence of scouts and panelists who are identifying standout players with the potential to follow in the footsteps of Nigerian football legends like Austin “JJ” Okocha and Sunday Oliseh.
In other tournament news, Aniocha South defeated Ika North East 2-1 at the Kwale Township Stadium to secure a place in the semi-finals. Goals from Nwabueze David and Odiwanor Victor sealed the victory, with Victor named Man of the Match. Meanwhile, Oshimili South advanced to the semi-finals after Ndokwa West was disqualified for misconduct.
The Anioma Unity Football Tournament features teams from all nine Local Government Areas in Delta North and will culminate in a grand finale at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba, on December 29, 2024. Fans eagerly await the semi-finals on December 23, as the competition intensifies.
