The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Honourable Sunny Ogwu has declared open a five-day teachers’ professional development capacity building workshop on teaching at the right level towards strengthening foundational skills to accelerate learning using activity based.
Declaring the workshop opened on Tuesday at the College of Education, Warri which was attended by 200 participants from rural areas across the State, the SUBEB Chairman says the training organized by the Board in collaboration with UBEC, was to develop teachers’ competence to cope with mixed-age classes.
The SUBEB chairman who was represented by the member representing Delta South in the board, Mr. Paul Kurugbe while explaining the Teaching-At-the Right Level concepts, said it was an adaptable and holistic approach which helps education systems focus on the basics and improve learning for all.
He further clarified that the approach made up of several components which according to him worked together to improve learning outcomes, noted that each aspect of the approach was essential to provide all learners with foundational skills.
Ogwu stated that the various training programmes organized by the board in collaboration with UBEC were to improve teachers’ capacity and provide critical guidance to learners aimed at improving teaching and learning in schools.
The SUBEB boss who disclosed that the board had trained over 11,806 teachers in different skilled areas, charged participants to take the training very serious as it was designed to help them develop their skills in modern teaching methods in remote areas.
He commended the efforts of the state governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa towards improving the standard of education in the state.
Earlier, Director Teachers’ Development in the board, Mrs. Juliet Eze-fili in her welcome remarks stated that the training was an intervention to bridge the gap of lack of teachers in the rural areas using the teaching at the right level approach.
Also speaking, Mr. Wasiu Olookoba of UBEC commended the delta state government for always keying into UBEC programmes adding that UBEC was interested in the development of teachers.
