Women and girls have been urged to take proactive steps in addressing gender-based violence in society.
This call was made by Honourable Bridget Anyafulu, Esq., the Member representing Oshimili South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Saint Brigid’s Girls Grammar School Old Students Association, Class of 1984. The event, themed “Preparing the Girl Child for Leadership,” took place in Asaba.
Honourable Anyafulu expressed deep concern about the prevalence of gender-based violence and its devastating effects, emphasizing the need for a united front to combat the issue. She highlighted the critical role of education in addressing violence against women and girls and referenced existing state laws designed to curb gender violence.
The event’s guest speaker, Honourable Orode Uduaghan, Delta State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Development, delivered a paper on the theme. Drawing from her extensive experience, she urged students to focus on their education and develop essential leadership skills.
Chief Moses Odibo, Chairman of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Warri Board of Directors, who served as the event’s chairman, praised the Old Girls Association for organizing the celebration. He encouraged other alumni groups to follow the example set by the Class of 1984.
In her goodwill message, Lady Roseline Amioku, Chairman of the Delta State Civil Service Commission, represented by Chief Chinonye Daphey, a former Commissioner of Women Affairs, Social and Community Development, encouraged students to engage in sports as a vital component of their development.
Mrs. Kristine Jobome-Emetulu, General Manager of DBS Asaba, urged the students to believe in themselves and strive for academic excellence.
The event was marked by vibrant cultural performances, the cutting of the 40th-anniversary cake, and the presentation of awards to former teachers by the alumni.
