The group, Southern Nigeria Youth Congress (SNYC) have called on every Southern leader and aggrieved party candidates who have gone to court to reconsider their actions in the overall interest of the region and withdraw every litigation against the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The youth group stated this during their World Press Conference on the State and Stake of Southern Nigeria Region in the Nigeria Project granted at the NUJ Press Center at Maryam Babaginda Way Asaba, on Friday, 2 June, 2023.
According to the statement read by the President General, Southern Nigeria Youth Congress Comrade Emordi Kelvin Ugochukwu on behalf of the group “We are specifically calling on Peter Obi to take his defeat in good fate and withdrew his case in the interest of the country and the region.
While appreciating Nigerians for supporting the South Presidency and heartily congratulating Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on his successful swearing in as the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that he’s a worthy son of Southern Nigeria, SNYC reiterated that it was the turn of the South-South to produce a President of the Senate.
“We are calling on all elected senators
from Southern Nigeria and other regions to support a South-South Senate President in the spirit of fair play. For those bringing up the argument that senate President should go to the North because President Bola Tinubu is from the South-West, may we remind them that the 8 years of immediate past President Mohammadu Buhari saw Bukola Saraki and Ahmed Lawan from the North as Senate Presidents. It is therefore only right for the position to now rotate to South-South and we believe His Excellency Sen. Godswill Akpabio is best qualified, experienced and possesses the needed capacity to effectively perform as a Senate President. We, therefore pass a vote of Confidence on His Excellency Senator Godswill Akpabio for the exalted office of the senate president.
“We also encourage every elected member of the House of Representatives from Southern Nigeria to support a Northern Speakership bid for equity and fairness while we call on all Nigerians to support the South Eastern Nigeria for the Deputy speakership in the spirit of inclusivity.” Emordi Ugochukwu added.
Commending Chief Government Ekpomupolo AKA Tompolo and his Tantita Security Services Company for the efforts so far in sanitizing the region, the SNYC appreciated all the Southern leaders and stakeholders helping Nigeria in the battle to curtail economic sabotage through crude oil theft and bunkering.
The Group also called on the Federal Government through the Federal Ministries of Environment, Petroleum, Niger Delta Affairs, NIMASA and NNPC to immediately commence the cleanup of Ogoni and other communities in the Niger Delta affected by oil spillage and as well upscale youth economic empowerment in the region to curtail restiveness.
“On Police brutality in southern region, we want to state unequivocally that the
Southern Nigeria region are the biggest victims of police brutality, this will no longer be condoned or tolerated, it is on this note that the Southern Nigeria Youth Congress is setting up a special task force to partner with human right bodies and other relevant stakeholders on police brutality and human rights related issues. We must therefore warn that every officer who is involved in the act of brutalizing civilians within the region should stop forthwith, we wish to also call on the inspector general of police to
intensify efforts to curb this disturbing menace within the Police rank and files as any further brutality of our civilian brothers/Sisters will be met with equal force of redress. Meanwhile, we are calling on all southern Nigeria youths to be law-abiding and be of best behavior.
“We, the Southern Nigeria youths wishes to declare our endorsement and support for the total removal of subsidy but calls on the Federal government to as a matter of urgency put machineries in place to ensure immediate and full kick off of Modular refineries operations in the country to tackle the current outrageous fuel price.
“Federal Government should also improve the use of electricity and consider
vehicles running on compressed gasses to create an alternative to PMS.
“We wish to call on every region and sector of Nigeria to seek peace and genuine reconciliation while we give the new administration led by President Bola
Ahmed Tinubu some time to address the concerns and interests of every region. On this note we wish to call on the President to immediately set up a National peace and reconciliation committee to listen to agitations of all regions and interests groups and make valued recommendations to the Federal Government on steps to be taken to achieve lasting Peace.
“We wish to call on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on infrastructure, particularly Federal roads within the Southern Region which connects us to other parts of the country.
“Finally we wish to call on the President to decentralize the Sea port in Lagos
and as a matter of policy bring other sea ports and deep river ports within the region to life.
“Conclusively, we encourage Nigerians especially all Southerners to support this
Administration to succeed. This is the position of Southern Nigeria Youths regarding the Nigeria project.” The Comrade Emordi Ugochukwu read SYNC statement added.
