The Delta State Government has identified the reactivation of moribund seaports in the country as a proactive step in the fight against poverty and underdevelopment.
The State Deputy Governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro disclosed this today in Government House Asaba when he received members of the House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on the underutilization of the Southeast and South – South Seaports.
Deacon Otuaro stated that the move by the Committee to look into the remote causes of the underutilization of the seaports was commendable and urged them to ensure that effort was geared towards full utilization of the seaports.
He noted that when put to good use it will ultimately boost the economy of host communities States and the Nation at large coupled with job creation.
The Deputy Governor also noted that the coming on stream of the Warri seaport will strengthen the stronger Delta Vision of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in the area of job opportunities and increase the revenue base of the State.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Rt. Hon. Buba Yusuf Yakubu said they were in Delta to investigate the reason the Warri seaport was underutilized and recommend solutions to the challenge.
Rt. Hon Yakubu said it was unfortunate that most seaports in Nigeria were in bad shape emphasizing that members of the House of Representatives decided to investigate the reasons as a way of bringing them back to live as it will boost the economy of the Nation, alleviate poverty and create wealth.
He said no effort will be spared in bringing the seaports on stream and sued for the support of all Nigerians.
Also speaking, the members representing Warri Federal Constituency and Vice Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi said when Warri seaport come alive it will turn the economy of the State around.
The Committee team which asked for the State Government’s blessing as they carried out their duty, disclosed that they started the inspection tour in Lagos and will be leaving Asaba to Warri for the inspection of Warri Seaport
