The people of the Niger Delta, particularly the Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, have expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing into law the Act establishing the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko.
In a heartfelt letter of appreciation, High Chief (Dr.) Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, commended the President for this landmark decision, describing it as a long-awaited breakthrough for the institution and the region.
The university, established in 2014, had operated for nearly a decade without full legal status, limiting its growth and impact. With the new Act in place, the institution now has the legal framework required to function optimally, paving the way for enhanced academic and research opportunities in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
“This magnanimous gesture symbolizes your goodwill towards the region and your unwavering commitment to the advancement of learning and development of its people,” Tompolo wrote. “It came at a time when all hope seemed lost, and your decision has brought renewed enthusiasm to the Niger Delta.”
He highlighted the significance of NMU in bridging the knowledge gap in Nigeria’s maritime industry, noting that before this development, Ghana was the only country in West Africa with a maritime university. President Tinubu’s approval, he said, now positions Nigeria as a key player in maritime education, with immense potential to develop manpower for the sector.
Beyond education, the formal recognition of NMU is expected to drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and help reduce youth restiveness in the region. Tompolo emphasized that the university would bring much-needed development to oil-producing communities and further the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
Recalling Tinubu’s visit to Oporoza, the ancestral headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom, in November 2022, Tompolo praised the President for fulfilling his campaign promise to legalize the institution. “This is a promise made and a promise kept,” he stated.
As the region celebrates this milestone, he called on all stakeholders to support the President’s administration and maintain peace to attract further development.
“Your Excellency, you have engraved your name in the hearts of the people of the Niger Delta through this decision,” Tompolo concluded, assuring the President of the region’s continued support and appreciation.
With this historic move, the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, is now set to fully realize its potential as a hub for maritime education and innovation, benefiting not just the Niger Delta but the entire nation.
