Thirty persons including a popular pastor were arrested recently at night for pouring refuse into drains in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Olorugun Godspower Asiuhwu, chairman of Delta State Task Force on Environment disclosed this today in Asaba while speaking to reporters in the NUJ programme ‘from parley to party’.
He spoke on how hotels and eateries in Asaba, Warri, Effurun and other urban towns and cities across the state were polluting the environment by channeling their septic waste to the drains, even up to 500 meters away from their locations, and leaving people in the neighborhood with offensive odour.
The Delta State Task Force Chairman on Environment frowned at the bad habit of hotels in Asaba and other major cities to channel their waste water from the kitchens and bathrooms into public drains, adding that such hotels shall soon be sanctioned
While pointing out that experts had been commissioned to investigate the hotels and eateries on the issue, he warned those concerned to desist and find better ways of disposing of their septic waste or face the wrath of the law.
Asiuhwu said that the Oborevwori administration was scout ready to make all parts of the state clean.
He said that some officials have been detailed at night to catch people who were in the habit of dumping refuse on drains.
He also said that from the Custom Check Point on the Asaba Onitsha express road to the Bridge shall soon be cleared of those parking trucks and green vegetation planted so that visitors to Asaba using the express way would be welcomed with a beautiful environment.
He added that the 14 days notice given to the trucks and heavy duty vehicles has expired.
He also gave marching orders to owners of uncompleted buildings harbouring miscreants to do something about it or their C of O might be revoked by the government.
He advised citizens to be vigilant and report any body carrying heavy bags in the name of collecting plastics to report such persons to the task force on environment or the police
Iron condemned or metal scavengers remained banned and should not resurface in any other guise.
On developers or builders going to Oko to source labourers, the chairman on Task Force on Environment, appealed to them to bear with the government, adding that the overall intention was for the security of the state.
On a cheerful note, Asiuhwu said that his task force and Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency were on the same page as far as cleaning the streets of Asaba, disclosing that the street sweepers no long pour sands into the drains and gutters.
He appreciated the efforts of journalists in the state, saying that his doors were wide open to entertain any query from them.
