The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, has encouraged parents to support their children’s participation in sports, emphasizing the importance of combining sports with education for holistic development.
Mr. Onoriode made this statement during the grand finale of the Osubi Unity Cup 2024 Football Competition, organized by Sheriff Oborevwori Junior, the son of the Governor of Delta State. The event, held at the Osubi Community Secondary School field, featured a thrilling final match between Udumurhie and Team Elite. Udumurhie emerged victorious with a 7-6 win in a penalty shootout, securing the grand prize of ₦5 million.
Speaking to journalists at the event, Mr. Onoriode, alongside the Director General of the Sports Commission, Mr. Festus Ohwojero, highlighted the transformative benefits of sports for young people.
“Involvement in sports promotes physical fitness and fosters essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience,” he said. “Early participation in sports can also help identify talents and provide pathways to professional careers in athletics.”
He urged parents to actively support local sports initiatives, stating, “By encouraging children to engage in sports, parents can help shape a generation of skilled athletes who can proudly represent their communities, the state, and the nation.”
The Sports Commission Chairman further assured residents of Delta State that, under the M.O.R.E. Agenda of Governor Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, the government is committed to improving sports facilities across the 25 Local Government Areas. He particularly noted plans to give the Warri Township Stadium a much-needed facelift, recognizing that better facilities are crucial for nurturing talent and fostering development in sports.
Mr. Onoriode emphasized that education and sports are not mutually exclusive but complementary, and both are vital for the growth and success of young individuals.
