Ahead of the 2024 Nigeria Polytechnic Games to be hosted by the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku, the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has given assurances that the games, the 23rd in the series, christened “Ogwashi-Uku 2024”, would be a spectacular landmark edition as a confirmation of Delta’s pedigree as Nigeria’s foremost sporting state.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, made this assertion, while performing the ground breaking inauguration of facilities, prominent amongst which are the basketball and volleyball courts at the games complex, sited in within the institution’s premises.
According to him, “Delta State as hosts of the 23rd edition of the Games, will definitely be a testament to the state’s superlative dominance in the annals of the Nigerian sporting terrain”.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the President of NIPOGA and Rector of Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic, Bldr Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu revealed that, hosting the NIPOGA 2024 games will provide a benchmark for future hosts, adding that one of innovative steps taken to add greater credibility to the games is the appointment of ”Mathematical” Segun Odegbami as NIPOGA 2024 Icon/ ambassador.
The Rector further posited that Dr Segun Odegbami’s appointment is in recognition of his efforts in conceiving the maiden edition of NIPOGA in 1976 as well as being a most prominent polytechnic graduate; as an alumnus of Ibadan Polytechnic, where his football wizardry was discovered, with a string of national, continental and global honours.
In her own comments, Pat-Susan Omoware, who is the Director of Sports at the institution, promised that the Ogwashi-Uku 2024 ÑIPOGA would be a remarkable positive departure from earlier editions in terms organization.
Highpoint of the ground breaking inauguration of facilities ceremony, was the investiture of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, as the Grand Patron of NIPOGA.
