The Nigerian government, in collaboration with Google Africa, has launched a N100 million fund to support AI-focused startups. Managed by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of positioning Nigeria as a leader in AI development. Communications Minister Bosun Tijani highlighted that the fund will help entrepreneurs create solutions for real-world problems and boost economic growth.
Eligible startups must be based in Nigeria, have at least one Nigerian founder, and focus on AI, with applications open until September 25, 2024. Selected startups can receive up to ₦10 million in funding, along with access to Google’s AI tools and mentorship. Though the fund aims to promote local innovation, some stakeholders express concerns that it may not fully address the challenges AI startups face in Nigeria.
