West African leaders under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States will hold an emergency meeting in Abuja today Sunday.
The meeting comes on the heels of the military coup in the Republic of Niger upended the constitutional political leadership of Mohammed Bazoum.
This was disclosed in a statement circulated by Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake.
“Following the coup in Republic of Niger that has upended the constitutional political leadership in the West African country, the Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Tinubu will host a special meeting of the regional leaders on Sunday, July 30 in Abuja”, the statement read.
At Sunday’s meeting, ECOWAS leaders will, among other things, discuss possible sanctions.
Tinubu had on Wednesday condemned the current political situation in the neighbouring country, promising that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the sub-region.
He affirmed that the regional bloc would deploy all means necessary to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
