Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Delta State Chapter Chairperson, Comrade (Mrs) Patricia Gbemudu condemned the high level of insecurity and ritual killings of females in the State, and enjoined the security agencies, professional bodies and members of the public to curb the menace.
Comrade Gbemudu made the condemnation at the conclusion of the 2018 NAWOJ week with the theme “Media Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Female Reporters; a Career Plan” in Asaba.
While calling on Deltans to join hands with relevant authorities in building a virile society, the Delta NAWOJ leader enumerated some of the achievements of the present executive, mostly in areas of awareness creation and advocacy visits to community leaders, government agencies, markets and schools. Adding, she disclosed that the NAWOJ Frith club, established in public secondary schools in the State, had become the platform for the Association to continually reach out to children of secondary school age.
Comrade Gbemudu thanked media organizations, civil society groups, individuals and government agencies who partnered with the Association, as well as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for their support, stressing that collaboration remained the key to actualising greater feats.
She said the Association marked its 2018 NAWOJ week with donation of food items to an orphanage, in the spirit of the Christmas season, and a workshop to economically empower it’s female members, in line with the Association’s vision of touching the lives of women and children.
The Vice Chairman and Secretary of the State NUJ, Comrades Patrick Ochei and Churchill Oyowe, commended Delta NAWOJ for advocating good welfare for the vulnerable in the society, and urged them to keep up the good work.
Earlier, the members of the Delta NAWOJ visited the mother of Divine Grace Orphanage one and two, to donate food items to the home. The items includes bags of rice, tubers of yam, bunches of plantain, gallon of groundnut oil, cartons of tin tomatoes and noodles, as well as fruits.
The highlights of the NAWOJ Week featured praise and worship session, educative games for female reporters, rendering of the women theme song, seminar and workshop handled by lady Ejiro Umukoro, interactive session to clarify grey areas, as well as practical on how to tie headgear, taught by a beautician in the state, Mrs Evelyn Emeyazia.
