The gale of defection sweeping through Edo Central Senatorial District has continued unabated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the receiving end. The latest of such defection is a prominent leader of the APC, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, the Uzoya of Esan land, who has now dumped the party and threw his weight behind the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. Asue Ighodalo.
The defection marks a crucial development in the ongoing political realignments within Edo State. The APC, which has been grappling with internal conflicts and power struggles, now faces a fresh challenge with the departure of yet another key regional leader.
His exit signals a potential shift in the balance of power and voter allegiance in the region, which could have far-reaching implications for the party’s future electoral prospects.
The decision to support Ighodalo is particularly noteworthy. Ighodalo, known for his grassroots engagement and progressive policies, has been steadily gaining popularity. His vision for a more inclusive and development-focused governance has resonated with many, especially in Edo Central. The endorsement from the former APC leader would bolster Ighodalo’s credibility and influence, attracting more supporters to his camp.
In a letter signed by Chief Inegbeneki, dated 8th June 2024 and seen by newsmen, the former APC leader expressed his disillusionment with the party’s current direction and leadership. He cited “some recent developments in the party in my LGA and state which conflict with my core principles and values” as the reason behind making the decision to exit the party.
This development has triggered a wave of reactions from various political stakeholders. Many assume that the decision cannot be disassociated from the Edo APC’s gubernatorial candidate’s lacklustre performances and dour outings over the past months.
As Edo State gears up for the next electoral cycle, the realignment of political forces will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the outcomes. The defection of the APC leader in Edo Central and his endorsement of Ighodalo underscores the dynamic and unpredictable nature of Nigerian politics.
In the coming months, the political atmosphere in Edo State is expected to be charged with heightened activities and strategic maneuvering.
