Frontline aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Delta 2023 Governorship race, Olorogun David Edevbie, has expressed his solidarity with the women of Delta State on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
In a statement released by Fred Edoreh, Head of Strategic Communications of his Campaign Organisation, David Edevbie said his commitment to the womenfolk is without reservation.
“I celebrate with all women of Delta State on this occasion of the International Women’s Day and commend our Delta women for their commitment and invaluable contributions to the development of our dear state.
“Delta is incredibly blessed with women of high virtue, tenacity, beauty and brains, and they have consistently deployed these through our homes, across communities, businesses and in their various workplaces, in public service and the organised and informal private sectors. They have remained great mobilisers for the unity and peace of our people.
“We owe it a duty not only to protect and defend our women, young and old, rural and urban, against all forms of violence, abuses and discrimination but also to promote their interest and well being as wives, mothers and partners in progress.
“Interestingly, the theme for this year’s celebration is: “Gender Equality for Sustainable Development,” and we have moved ahead to declare our reservation of 35% of all political appointments for women, under my watch as Governor, God willing.
“This is not only in line with the Affirmative Action but especially by
my conviction that the energy inherent in our women is highly needed for the development of our state.”
Edevbie urged women advocacy groups across the country not to relent in pursuing the cause of the protection and promotion of women in every facet of our society and for greater inclusion in governance, no matter the odds.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
