Delta State House of Assembly has screened and confirmed the Chairman and members of the state Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy as nominated by the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
They included Honourable Justice Celestina Ogisi (Rtd), Chairman; Professor Louis Ikechukwu Ojogwu, Member representing Delta North; Alexander Neyin, Member representing Delta South and Amb. Dr. Iris Jewo Ibi, Member representing Delta Central.
Others were Augustine Nwabueze Escagwu Esq, Member representing Nigerian Bar Association; Festus Chukwuemeke Onyaeju, Member representing Nigerian Correctional Services and Mrs. Uju Rosaline Monye, Secretary, representing Ministry of Justice.
The Majority Leader in the House, Hon. Engr. Emeka Nwaobi, moved the motion for the confirmation and was seconded by Hon. Isaac Anwuzia, Member representing Aniocha South Constituency.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, who presided over the screening exercise, congratulated the confirmed nominees and wished them well in the discharge of their duties.
In a related development, the lawmakers approved the request of the state governor to appoint 20 Special Advisers.
The request was made through a letter to the lawmakers and read on the floor of the House by the Speaker.
The governor in the letter stated that in line with the provisions of section 196, sub-section 1-3, of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, (1999 as Amended), he wished to appraise the House of his intention to appoint 20 Special Advisers to assist in driving the administration; hence, the need to seek the approval of the House.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, moved the motion for consideration and approval and was seconded by the Deputy Chief Whip, Alfred Martins, Member representing Warri North Constituency.
