Asaba, Delta State – January 29, 2025
In a bold move to combat the rising menace of drug abuse, the Delta State Government has unveiled an intensified campaign aimed at protecting public health and ensuring a safer society. The initiative, set to be officially flagged off by the governor on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, will focus on awareness, stricter regulations, and rehabilitation for affected individuals.
Speaking at a pre-flag-off press conference, the Director General of the State Bureau of Orientation and Communications, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Esq, emphasized the urgent need for collective action. He called on families, schools, journalists, religious institutions, and other stakeholders to join forces in tackling the growing threat of drug abuse in the state.
According to Oghenesivbe, “So there are schools that we have mapped out, and from February 3rd to the 18th, we will be on the road to sensitize students on the dangers of drug abuse,”
The DG further revealed that the governor’s push for this campaign stemmed from a tragic incident in July 2023, when a stray bullet during a drug-related enforcement operation injured two young boys. Deeply pained by the event, the governor has since directed the Bureau to intensify sensitization efforts across the state.
To ensure the campaign’s success, the Delta State Government is collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA). The State Commander of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Abubakar Wada, Esq., reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to eradicating illicit drug use through enforcement and education.
A key highlight of the initiative is the promotion of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) clubs in secondary schools, an NDLEA-driven program designed to empower students with knowledge about the dangers of substance abuse. Through essay competitions, drama performances, and quiz contests, the clubs will engage students in meaningful discussions about drug prevention.
“We want the media to play a crucial role in propagating this campaign. As we move around, we will be sending updates on our progress, and we urge journalists to help disseminate this vital information,” Oghenesivbe added.
With this renewed commitment, the Delta State Government, in collaboration with key agencies and stakeholders, is determined to tackle substance abuse at its roots, ensuring a drug-free future for the state.
