The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has initiated a comprehensive nationwide sensitization campaign to tackle pressing national issues critical to Nigeria’s development. These include HIV/AIDS awareness, security consciousness, curbing the get-rich-quick syndrome, and advocating for tax reforms.
The campaign was officially flagged off during a press briefing by the NOA Director-General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by Mrs. Rebecca Nasamu, Director of General Services, at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Asaba, Delta State.
Issa-Onilu emphasized the importance of addressing these five key areas, describing them as central to the nation’s unity, progress, and well-being. The campaign will be conducted across all Local Government Areas in Delta State and subsequently nationwide, with collaboration from various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society organizations, religious bodies, and the media.
Key Areas of the Campaign
1. HIV/AIDS Awareness
Timed to coincide with World HIV/AIDS Day on December 1, the campaign intensifies efforts to provide free HIV testing and counseling, ensuring accessibility to antiretroviral treatments, and partnering with local and global organizations to combat stigma and discrimination. Issa-Onilu underscored the critical role of citizens in practicing responsible health behaviors and supporting individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
2. Security Consciousness
Security remains a priority for the government. The campaign highlights ongoing initiatives such as improved equipment, training, and funding for security agencies, alongside enhanced community policing and the deployment of advanced surveillance and intelligence systems. Citizens are encouraged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and report suspicious activities to ensure a safer society.
3. Combating the Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome
Recognizing the rise of unethical practices due to economic challenges, the government is focusing on youth empowerment, skills acquisition programs, and support for small and medium enterprises through grants and loans. Fraudulent activities, including internet scams and financial crimes, are being addressed through stricter enforcement by agencies like the EFCC and ICPC. Citizens are urged to embrace hard work and integrity over shortcuts to wealth, particularly during the festive season.
4. Promoting Human Rights
The campaign also addresses the protection of citizens’ rights by strengthening laws against gender-based violence, human trafficking, and other violations. It promotes the establishment of support centers for survivors and educates citizens on their constitutional rights and responsibilities.
5. Tax Reforms
The introduction of four reform bills—the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill—is aimed at simplifying tax administration. These reforms seek to eliminate double taxation, ensure fairness for low-income earners, and promote transparency in revenue collection.
A Call for Collective Action
Issa-Onilu reiterated that these initiatives require the active participation of all Nigerians. He urged stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, civil society, and the media, to amplify the campaign’s messages and drive nationwide awareness.
“This campaign is not just about government policies; it’s a call to action for every Nigerian to contribute to a healthier, more secure, and ethically grounded society. Together, we can foster unity and development across the country,” he said.
The sensitization activities will continue throughout December, utilizing diverse platforms to reach citizens in all 774 Local Government Areas of the country.
The campaign, themed “Promoting Awareness, Ethical Values, and National Development,” aims to create a society rooted in collective responsibility, informed decision-making, and shared progress.
