Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has been named the Delta Man of the Year 2024 following a survey conducted by The NEHEMS-CAPOIN, an independent, non-governmental organization.
The award was presented at a ceremony titled “The Media Unveiling for Delta Man of the Year 2024 Award”, held in Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori emerged victorious ahead of Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, and Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) of Tantita Security Services, who manages the Federal Government’s Oil and Gas Facilities Security Surveillance Contract.
According to the poll results, Oborevwori secured 359 votes—349 from physical voting and 10 from online participation. Senator Nwoko came in second with a total of 329 votes (172 physical and 157 online), while Tompolo placed third with 164 votes (148 physical and 16 online).
Speaking at the event, Mr. Victor Sorokwu, Executive Director of The NEHEMS-CAPOIN, emphasized that the selection process was free from political influence and bias, focused solely on recognizing people-oriented leadership and good governance.
He explained that nominees were drawn from the state’s three senatorial districts through random sampling:
Oborevwori representing Delta Central, Nwoko from Delta North, and Tompolo from Delta South.
Sorokwu noted, “The NEHEMS-CAPOIN is dedicated to promoting people-centered leadership and good governance. As part of our civic responsibility, we believe leaders should be aware of how the public perceives their performance.”
He clarified that the poll was not an election, but rather an assessment of public perception to provide valuable feedback to leaders regarding their performance.
Physical polling was conducted in strategic locations across the state, including Abraka (Delta Central), Ozoro (Delta South), and Asaba (Delta North). Both physical and online voting were carried out over a period of four weeks, concluding at 11:59 p.m. on Friday.
Announcing the final results, Sorokwu stated: “After thorough verification to ensure fairness and integrity, the votes stand as follows: Chief Government Ekpemupolo with 164 votes, Senator Ned Nwoko with 329 votes, and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori leading with 359 votes.”
“Based on these results, we are proud to unveil Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the Delta Man of the Year 2024,” he declared.
In total, the three nominees garnered 852 out of the 900 expected physical votes, with additional online votes recorded.
