Delta State, Nigeria – A heated debate has erupted within the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following allegations of attempts to impose an extra-constitutional leadership structure. Hon. Chief Evance Ochuko Ivwurie has raised concerns about the activities of the Olorogun O’tega Emerhor-led Reconciliation Committee, accusing it of undermining the party’s constitutional framework and democratic principles.
In a detailed statement, Ivwurie highlighted what he described as a “persistent targeting” of the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR, whose contributions have significantly bolstered the APC’s leadership and grassroots appeal in Delta State. Despite the pressure, Ivwurie praised Senator Omo-Agege’s calm and focused demeanor, describing him as a purpose-driven leader who exemplifies leadership through action and results.
Reconciliation Committee Under Fire
On September 3, 2024, a 21-member committee led by Olorogun O’tega Emerhor was tasked with reconciling aggrieved party members following the 2023 general elections. However, Ivwurie criticized the committee’s performance, stating that despite spending four months and N32 million, it failed to achieve its reconciliation mandate.
“By its own admission, the committee reconciled no one and only visited individuals,” Ivwurie said, adding that this failure has deepened divisions rather than mending them.
Alleged Power Grab
Ivwurie accused the committee of overstepping its mandate by proposing the creation of a “Leadership Council,” which he described as an unconstitutional power-grabbing mechanism. According to him, this council would undermine the authority of congress-elected party executives and concentrate decision-making in the hands of a few.
“This council is a dangerous aberration, reminiscent of authoritarian regimes. It seeks to usurp the powers of grassroots members and congresses, turning party members into permanent slaves in their own party,” Ivwurie declared.
Leadership Disputes
The alleged attempt to impose a new leadership structure has further fueled tensions within the Delta APC. Ivwurie criticized the committee’s support for elevating a Senatorial Vice Chairman over the Deputy State Chairman during the absence of State Chairman Engr. Omeni Sobotie, who is reportedly unwell. This move, he argued, disregards the party’s established constitutional order and favors individuals who would serve the committee’s agenda.
A Call for Constitutional Adherence
Ivwurie urged the APC in Delta State to reject the Emerhor Committee’s report, warning that its recommendations pose a significant threat to the party’s stability and democratic principles. He called for a recommitment to the party’s constitutional framework, emphasizing that any deviation could set a dangerous precedent nationwide.
“The Emerhor Committee’s actions are a disservice to the APC and the people of Delta State, whose growing confidence in the party must be respected and sustained,” he said.
Implications for the APC
As the Delta APC grapples with these internal challenges, Ivwurie’s statement serves as a stark warning against what he sees as attempts to derail the party’s constitutional governance. The outcome of this controversy is expected to have significant implications for the party’s cohesion and future prospects in the state and beyond.
