Delta State information officers have been urged to take a proactive role in promoting the policies and programs of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda.
This call was made by Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, Esq., Member representing Oshimili South State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, during her lecture titled “The Role of Information Officers as Pacesetters in the Actualization of the M.O.R.E. Agenda.” The lecture was delivered as part of the Press Week celebration organized by the State Information Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta Council, in Asaba.
Anyafulu, a human rights activist turned lawmaker, emphasized the importance of information officers in effectively communicating the state government’s policies to the public. She noted that their role is pivotal in ensuring citizens understand and support the administration’s efforts.
In his remarks, Dr. Okubo, Chief Strategist to Governor Oborevwori, highlighted that information officers act as a vital bridge between the government and the public. He urged them to go beyond basic information dissemination, positioning themselves as educators and managers of information to foster trust and transparency.
The State Head of Service (HoS), Mr. Reginald Bayoko, represented by the General Manager of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Asaba, Mrs. Kristine Emetulu, reiterated the importance of truth in public communication. Bayoko called on information officers to combat misinformation by staying well-informed about government policies to ensure accurate messaging.
Speaking on the theme, the Chairman of the State Information Chapel of NUJ, Comrade Kenneth Obieh, emphasized the need for continuous storytelling by information officers to highlight the achievements of ministries, departments, and agencies, thereby showcasing the Oborevwori administration’s efforts.
The event also featured a renowned public affairs analyst, Mr. Austin Omilo and immediate past National Ex Officio of the NUJ, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, who provided insights as a discussants on the topic. A panel discussion and interactive session allowed serving and retired staff of the Ministry of Information, along with journalists, to exchange ideas on how to amplify the state’s developmental strides.
The Press Week celebration served as a platform to reinforce the vital role of information officers in advancing good governance and fostering public trust in Delta State.
