As part of the activities set for the marking the 2021 Democracy Day, the Hispaniola – X Deck of the National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Pyrates Confraternity (PC), have called for sober reflections on our democratic journey and status of our nationhood.
The world renowned humanitarian group stated this in a jingle produced and made available to selected broadcast stations for airing, in celebration of this year’s Democracy Day by the Hispaniola X Deck’s Director of Events, Mr. Victor Dorgu.
The Pyrates Confraternity noted that, it was a reflection on the sacrifices made by our forebearers for the emergence of a democratic constitution and processes for our fatherland. Adding that the burden of democratic national development comes with obligations from the Citizens, the Leaders and Institutional organizations.
According to the NAS Democracy Day jingle message, “As citizens it is our obligation to participate in the selection of Representatives and elected Leaders, and to hold them accountable for their campaign promises and commitments. As well as the responsibility of the citizenry to uphold the constitution and demand the enforcement of its provisions”.
It maintained that, as elected leaders and representatives, it is a constitutional obligation for them to protect the Democratic constitutional rights and pronouncements by ensuring the respect for rule of law, Freedoms as enshrined in the constitution, Protection of life and property and Providing enabling environment for our democracy to continue to thrive.
It added that the institutional organizations have the obligation to continue to defend democracy/democratic conversations and engagement, educate our citizens on the required behaviour to ensure a robust democratic process.
“It is also their obligation to act as unbiased observers when individuals, associations and groups suffocate, contract and squeeze the democratic space against the provisions of our constitution.
“This year’s celebration is a remarkable one, never in our history (post-civil war) has the foundation of the unity of our nation been so shaken, but this is an opportunity to provide for the emergence of a United, purposeful and Proud nation. The challenging moment provide us with the opportunity to further deepen the conversations on the future of our nation, we must welcome and accept all voices, put them on the table and we must recognise the diversity in them.
“Our journey to a great democratic experience must begin with respect for the rule of law, Justice, Fairness and Equal opportunity to all and sundry.
“This year’s celebration therefore is a pit-stop for the journey of our nationhood.
“Happy Democracy Day Nigerians!!!”. The Hispaniola X Deck of NAS submitted in it’s 2021 Democracy Day Celebration jingle message.
